Designed and hand-cut custom bellybands for the JONES artbook* – A book dedicated to help fund BETTER THINGS: The Life and Choices of Jeffrey Catherine Jones, a wonderful documentary by Maria Paz Cabardo.
The book is a 64-page collection of artwork from artists in the comics, publishing, role-playing, and entertainment field. For a few of the bellybands, I created an extra element of surprise. I hand-glued a vibrant, hand-dyed Japanese paper – handmade by Haruhito Tamuro (in the style of Futoshi Umedo) to the back of a few bellybands. Besides cutting out the name “JONES”, I also added a sculptural element – I hand-cut the silhouette of a figure from a Jones painting, Descent 3. The paper figure folds down (neatly hidden) when the bellyband is wrapped around the book.
Then – when you slide the bellyband off the book, you can see the figure inside and it’s a simple move to pop it up and through the letter “N”. Re-close the slitted tabs and the bellyband holds its shape.
